Sprains, Strains & Minor Burns Treatment
Minor injuries like sprains, strains, burns, and lacerations are common and can often be treated safely without a trip to the emergency room. At Wilmington Medical Care, our experienced primary care providers offer same-day and walk-in care for non-emergency injuries to help you heal quickly and comfortably.

When to Treat at Home vs. When to See a Provider
For minor sprains or first-degree burns, self-care at home can sometimes be enough. Rest, over-the-counter pain medication, and gentle support may help the injury heal. However, if your symptoms persist or worsen, or if swelling, pain, or limited movement lasts more than a few days, you should schedule an appointment with one of our Wilmington primary care providers.
You Can Usually Treat at Home If:
- The area is lightly swollen or bruised
- Pain is mild to moderate and manageable
- You can move or bear light weight on the injury
- The burn affects only the top layer of the skin (mild redness or tenderness)
Sprain and Strain Treatment
Our team provides mild-to-moderate sprain and strain treatment in-office to support healing and prevent reinjury.
- A sprain occurs when ligaments are stretched or torn, often affecting the ankle, wrist, knee, or thumb.
- A strain involves injury to the muscles or tendons, usually caused by overuse or overstretching.
When to See a Primary Care Provider:
- You experience numbness, tingling, or swelling
- You cannot move the affected limb normally
- The pain does not improve after several days
- The joint feels unstable or weak
When to Go to Urgent Care
If the injured area is visibly bent, deformed, discolored, or extremely swollen, or if you cannot put weight on it, visit urgent care or emergency room immediately.
Fracture & Minor Injury
At Wilmington Medical care, we treat minor fractures, small cuts, bruises, and burns to prevent infection and promote healing. Our providers assess your injury, often proper wound care, and refer you for imaging or specialist care if needed.
We Can Treat:
Minor broken bones in fingers or toes
Mild to moderate back pain
Sprains or strains
Small cuts or lacerations
Minor burns
Black eyes
Insect and animal bites
If your wound does not stop bleeding, has a foreign object embedded, or shows signs of infection, schedule a visit promptly.
Minor Burn Treatment
Minor burns can cause redness, swelling, and tenderness—but they can also lead to infection if not properly cared for. Our providers offer safe, effective burn management to speed healing and reduce scarring.
During Your Visit, We Will:
- Assess the burn for infection or tissue damage
- Provide cleaning and dressing to protect the area
- Offer referrals for surgery or dermatology for deeper burns or scarring prevention
For first degree burns, you can usually apply a cool compress, petroleum jelly, and a nonstick bandage to soothe and protect the skin.
